Conservatory of Music and Dance
Melun, France
The Music Academy building is located in an urban area comprised of constructed and underutilized spaces such as playgrounds and wide avenues, as well as modernist structures such as council flats, gymnasiums, and schools. The design of the building takes its inspiration from the concept of a music box, with its solid and sober brick walls and its precious golden-copper cladding.
The shape of the building harmoniously integrates with its surroundings, with the rhythm of its golden openings punctuating its facades according to the orientation and natural light requirements. The facades, made of two main materials - dark bricks and copper - complement each other, creating a sense of permanence and sensuality in the teaching environment. The Music Academy building houses a variety of atmospheres, scales, and practices within a single volume. Its identity is strongly associated with its creative function, with precise effects, proportions, rhythms and tensions contributing to its unique character.
